Exercise groups for people with heart conditions

If you’ve had a heart attack or heart condition diagnosis, physical activity will be important for your recovery and future wellbeing. Exercise groups are a great way to support your return to activity and keep you motivated.

Returning to physical activity after a heart event or diagnosis can be challenging. However, it is an important step for future health and wellbeing.

Regular exercise or physical activity can:

  • lower your risk of further heart problems, hospital admissions and premature death
  • lower your blood pressure
  • improve your fitness and strength, making it easier to undertake normal daily activities
  • reduce your risk of depression and anxiety
  • improve your quality of life
  • improve your sleep and energy levels, reducing tiredness and fatigue
  • help people with type 2 diabetes keep blood glucose levels in the correct range, reducing risk of further heart complications.

Getting back to exercise

Developing the confidence to be physically active again can be hard if you’re recovering from a heart event.

If you’re eligible, cardiac rehabilitation is the best first step to returning to exercise.

It’s also very important to talk to your doctor or cardiologist before starting an exercise programme or new physical activity.

Joining a suitable exercise group is a good way to increase your confidence and help you exercise regularly.

Exercising with a support person such as a family member or friend can also boost your confidence and motivate you.

Benefits of group exercise

There are lots of good reasons to join an exercise group or sports club. Studies show that exercising with others can:

  • improve your physical health
  • help you exercise more regularly
  • improve your wellbeing and reduce the risk of depression
  • increase social connections
  • reduce frailty
  • help increase how long you live.
