Big hearts in Invercargill

Invercargill-based volunteer Sachira found purpose and community through the Heart Foundation’s Big Heart Appeal. Since joining as an area coordinator last year, he’s been inspired by the generosity and kindness of his community, spreading his own passion for giving back and encouraging others to do the same.

Sachira, an experienced IT professional originally from Sri Lanka, arrived in New Zealand a little over a year ago to further his studies at SIT Invercargill and pursue a master’s degree. While studying, he felt ready to give back to the Invercargill community that had welcomed him so warmly.

"I saw an ad for the Heart Foundation’s Big Heart Appeal," Sachira recalls. "I thought, why not? I’ve always loved helping out with charity events, and this seemed like the perfect way to get involved locally.”

With 15 years of career experience, Sachira is used to balancing multiple commitments and working within a team, skills he’s brought to his volunteer role as area coordinator. As he describes his first Heart Foundation event, he lights up.

“I was so impressed with how organised everything was. They sent me a detailed plan, and everyone I worked with was friendly and motivated. It just felt right.”

Now, after finishing his final assessment at university, Sachira has become a known face in the Invercargill volunteer scene, admired for his commitment and warm approach. He says he loves being part of a smaller community where people remember each other, and the impact is felt so clearly.

“People here are really generous. When I’m out with volunteers on the streets, it’s incredible to see how willing people are to support the Heart Foundation.”

Sachira encourages others to join in, highlighting how volunteering has helped him feel even more at home.

“Give it a go—there’s no reason not to,” he says. “The Heart Foundation is such an amazing cause, and you meet the best people. It’s been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey here.”

As a volunteer area coordinator with the Big Heart Appeal, Sachira has found both community and purpose in New Zealand, contributing to a cause close to his heart.

“I wouldn’t give it up for the world,” he says. “I’ll be coming back for many more Big Heart Appeals for years to come.”
